Day One of Nationals

It has been a full on day for the kids - the ratings of some of the competitors have been super high but our students have been strong competitors.
Winners go up to give the results - This was Thomas' first trip up to the recorders. :-)
Coaching is conducted at the end of every game - This helps the kids to analyse their game and to work on new strategies.
First few days at the Nationals
|

We have spent the first few days at the Nationals experiencing Melbourne weather at its best - Everything from humidity, sunshine to storms and heavy rain! We have nicer rooms this year but still no hot water most of the time, so we are having very quick showers. :-)
We walked to the Victoria Markets Sunday morning - got wet going there and on our way home, were boiling hot. The boys played in the Warm up Comp on Sunday afternoon - where Riley drew for third spot.

They have been fundraising selling chocolates and setting up a GoFundMe page to help subsise the trip. All up, they reduced their final amount by $130 per student.

May has been a very busy month in the Library. The Library has been transformed into a Star Wars Extravaganza with the lead up to May 4th.
Science Fiction and Star Wars books, activities, movies, displays were promoted to students with a very large Darth Vader keeping watch. The Reading Club met and discussed their favourite Star Wars & Science Fiction novels while some students sat close by completing the Yoda jigsaw.
All tute groups participated in a Star Wars Quiz with 11R1 coming out the worthy winners. The Lego Wall became the site for some Tie Fighters and Storm Troopers and the Viewing Area was packed at lunchtime when students munched on popcorn while they watched The Empire Strikes Back.
Staff were also treated to a book presentation with some Star Wars food such as Leia’s Buns, Stormtroopers and Wookies
Overall, it has been a very exciting beginning to May with lots of different activities for students to participate in.
What's Happening in 2017 in the Library?

It has been an enjoyable and busy start to 2017 in the School Library. The Year 7 students have enjoyed coming to the Library before school, lunch-time and after school.
Which Club shall I join?
There are lots of clubs and activities in the Library this year. Come along at any stage and join in. The Homework & Study Skills Group is specifically to help Year 7s get organised for high school. They can get their diaries set up; learn helpful tips on their time management, what their learning style is and how to stay focussed at school.
The Robotics & Coding Club is very popular with 40 students attending and enjoying their first steps into the Coding World. Several students from 2016 have continued to attend and are very good mentors for the new members.

Chess Nationals in Melbourne
|
![]() |
A group of very excited students arrived in Melbourne for the Chess Nationals on the weekend. It has been quite cool, with us all wearing warm jackets. The dorms are pretty basic and Dylan and Morgan were sharing their room with a very inquisitive little mouse!
On Sunday morning, we walked into the city and after 9kms, arrived back home with a group of very grumpy kids complaining about the merits of exercise (Not!)
The Individual tournament was held yesterday, with Paddy and Jack drawing for third place, with Paddy taking out the third prize on a countback. A fabulous effort by all the team.
Today, the Nationals are under way with all the kids extremely focussed on winning, improving their game and ranking.
A fun Games Night tonight with Transfer Chess and a few other activities to relax after a hard day of concentration.
New furniture arrives!

Finally, we are starting to receive some of our new furniture. Beautiful teal blue booths for upper school students as well as a fantastic matching 'S' shaped seating area.
Students are enjoying the new layout and have been very helpful getting things set up.
